What types of chronic conditions are treated by family medicine?

Family medicine providers help patients manage heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, cancer, asthma, and some common allergies.

Can I see a family medicine provider on weekends?

Providers are available at our Rochester Northwest Clinic on Saturdays. This walk-in clinic sees patients of all ages and can address acute illness, as well as lacerations, rashes, dislocations, sprains, and fractures.

Certified Nurse Practitioners (CNPs) and Physician Assistants (PAs) are also available on Saturdays and Sundays at OMC's FastCare Clinics in Rochester's Shopko stores.

Is it possible for all family members to have the same care provider?

Yes, total family care is what family medicine is all about. A personalized care team makes visits comfortable and personal. However, family members may have different providers if they choose.

Does family medicine offer birth control?

All types of birth control are offered by family medicine providers, including arm implants (e.g., Implanon, Nexplanon).

Are walk-in appointments available?

Family medicine encourages patients to make an appointment. Often, there is same-day appointment availability, although it may not be with your regular provider. Walk-in blood pressure readings are always available.
