Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs)

For childbirth and beyond

Who are Nurse Midwives?

Measuring babyMidwife means “with woman.” Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs) specialize in giving support, routine healthcare, and helping you get any extra care needed.

At Olmsted Medical Center, our CNMs believe you need time and special attention so you can be healthy. Young girls and adult women can see a CNM for:

  • yearly check-ups
  • health counseling
  • care for common infections that happen to women
  • birth control and family planning
  • care and support during pregnancy and birth
  • care after birth
  • menopause.

Meet OMC's Midwifes:

Care during your pregnancy and birth

Certified Nurse Midwives help more than 300,000 women give birth each year in the United States. At OMC, your visits with the CNM are unique and hands-on from the start of your pregnancy through birth. Midwives are experts in knowing the difference between normal changes that occur during pregnancy and symptoms that need extra attention.

If you have a high risk pregnancy or problems during labor, your midwife will work with a doctor to make sure you get the best and safest care for you and your baby. Your midwife will also work with other healthcare providers: nurses, social workers, dietitians, doulas, childbirth educators, and other specialists to help you get the care you need. Your midwife can order pain medicine during labor. If you think you may want to use pain medicine during labor, your midwife will give you information so you can decide what is right for you.

Pain Management during Labor and Delivery

There are many childbirth options available that allow women to make a choice of labor and delivery comfort methods. Informing you about the labor and delivery comfort measures available at the OMC BirthCenter is our main goal. Each woman has a different degree of pain during labor and delivery. As a result, we offer a number of different options for management. Learn more about the options available on our pain management page.
