Preventive Care for Women

Preventive care can help you avoid many of the risk factors that lead to illness and chronic disease. Preventive care may include:

  • Wellness exams: checkups that are done when you are healthy.
  • Screening tests: tests that look for signs of disease before you have any symptoms. Pap, mammogram, and PSA tests are examples.
  • Immunizations: shots to prevent specific conditions such as flu or pneumonia.

The right schedule of wellness, screening, and immunizations is one that you and your healthcare provider agree on. It will be based on your age, how healthy you are, and your risk factors (like family history).

Routine Physical Exams

Getting a routine physical exam is the first important step you can take for your health. It not only establishes a relationship with your healthcare provider but it also provides you an opportunity to discuss your screening results.

On average, men should see their healthcare provider every five years, and women every three to five years, but to be sure check with your provider regarding how often you should have a physical exam. Each visit should include height, weight, body mass index (BMI), blood pressure check, and any necessary immunizations.


Another of the most important steps you can take toward protecting yourself from serious illness is to stay current on the vaccination schedule your healthcare provider prescribes. Vaccines are safe and prevent illnesses and potential complications from even mild diseases.

Depending on your health, age, and vaccine history, your healthcare provider may recommend the following vaccines:

  • Influenza vaccine
  • Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis vaccine or booster.
  • Varicella
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine
  • Measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine
  • Pneumococcal vaccine
  • Meningococcal vaccine
  • Zoster
  • Hepatitis A vaccine
  • Hepatitis B vaccine

Health Screenings: Know Your Numbers!

Olmsted Medical Center has all the tools you need in the form of simple health screenings that help to assess the quality of your health and to see if you are at risk for certain conditions. Knowing and keeping track of "your numbers" (e.g., cholesterol levels and blood-pressure ranges) is a powerful way to keep a pulse on your health, and can help you relieve stress about your overall wellness. Some important numbers for you to monitor:

  • Weight and Body Mass Index (BMI)
  • Blood pressure
  • Blood sugar (glucose)        
  • Bone density
  • Cholesterol and triglycerides

Cervical Cancer Screening

Getting a pap smear is an important screening tool for cervical cancer. Follow these guidelines based on your age:

  • Ages 19–39: Pap smear every 2 years, starting at age 21, every 3 years after age 30 and 3 normal tests.
  • Ages 40–64: Pap smear every 3 years after 3 consecutive normal tests.
  • Ages 65 and older: Pap smear every 3 years after 3 consecutive normal tests, discontinuing between ages 65–70.

If you have had an abnormal test result in the past your healthcare provider will discuss with you how often you should have one done.

Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) Screening

This screening is also used to help determine how often you should have a cervical cancer screening after the age of 30 (no more frequent than every 3 years if your screening is normal).

Mental Health Screenings

Stress, which can be good and bad, can be a contributing factor in many diseases and conditions including obesity and heart attacks.   Stress is just one component of mental health. Other mental health problems, such as depression, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, generalized anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder, are often undiagnosed, untreated, or under-treated.

In addition, talk with your primary healthcare provider about whether the following tests and testing intervals are right for you:

  • Colonoscopy every 10 years
  • Barium enema and flexible sigmoidoscopy every 5 years
  • Annual stool blood test with flexible sigmoidoscopy every 5 years
