Types of Breast Surgery

Breast-Conserving Surgery (Lumpectomy)
  • Removes only the tumor and a small area of surrounding tissue, preserving most of the breast.
  • May also involve removing lymph nodes under the arm.
  • Usually performed as outpatient surgery so you can return home the same day.
  • Tissue is tested in our lab, and your surgeon will follow up with results.
Mastectomy
  • Removes the entire breast, and lymph nodes if needed.
  • Typically requires an overnight hospital stay for monitoring and care.
  • Reconstruction can often be performed at the same time or at a later date.

Breast Reconstruction

If you choose reconstruction, our surgeons can restore the breast’s appearance or create a new breast. This can help improve body confidence and emotional well-being after surgery.

After Surgery: Your Next Steps

Breast surgery is often part of a larger treatment plan. Depending on your diagnosis, your care team may recommend follow-up treatments such as:

  • Hormonal therapy
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy

At OMC, you’ll never go through this journey alone. Your dedicated care team will guide you through recovery and support you with ongoing care.
