Step 1: Consultation
Your journey starts with a one-on-one consultation with our experienced plastic surgeons. During this visit, we will:
- Talk about your goals and concerns – We’ll discuss what you hope to achieve with breast reduction.
- Review your medical history – This includes past breast procedures, any planned weight loss, and current medications.
- Assess your breasts and overall health – We’ll examine your breast size, shape, and skin condition.
- Take measurements and photos – These help with medical records and insurance approval, if needed.
- Explain the procedure and risks – We’ll walk you through what to expect before, during, and after surgery.
- Discuss insurance coverage – If the surgery is medically necessary, we’ll help determine if insurance may cover it.
Step 2: The Surgery
Breast reduction surgery is done under general anesthesia and usually takes 2 to 4 hours. During the procedure, your surgeon will:
- Remove excess breast tissue, fat, and skin – This reshapes and lifts the breasts.
- Reposition the nipple and areola – This helps create a natural, balanced appearance.
- Use precise techniques to reduce scarring – The goal is to achieve a symmetrical and proportionate result.
Most patients go home the same day with detailed aftercare instructions to support healing and recovery.
Step 3: Recovery
Healing takes time, but most patients recover in stages:
- First week – Swelling and mild discomfort are common. A surgical bra will provide support.
- 2 to 4 weeks – You can slowly return to normal activities but should avoid strenuous exercise.
- 6+ weeks: Most swelling subsides, and your results become more noticeable. Scars will continue to fade over time.
Our team will be with you every step of the way, providing guidance for a smooth recovery and the best possible results.
Male Breast Reduction - Gynecomastia Surgery
What is male breast reduction?
Gynecomastia is a common condition in men that causes enlarged breast tissue due to hormonal imbalances, weight changes, or genetics. If you feel self-conscious about your chest or experience discomfort, male breast reduction surgery can help create a firmer, more masculine appearance.
This safe and effective procedure removes excess fat and glandular tissue to sculpt the chest. Depending on your needs, treatment may involve liposuction alone or surgical excision to remove glandular tissue and excess skin.
Who is a candidate for male breast reduction?
You may be a candidate if you:
- Have persistent excess breast tissue that doesn’t improve with diet and exercise
- Feel self-conscious about the appearance of your chest
- Experience discomfort or chafing due to excess tissue
- Are in good overall health and have realistic expectations
Not sure if male breast reduction is right for you? A consultation with our board-certified plastic surgeons can help determine the best approach for your goals.
The Surgical Process
Step 1: Consultation & Evaluation
During your consultation, your surgeon will:
- Assess your chest and discuss your goals
- Determine the best treatment plan based on your needs
- Order an X-ray if needed to check your chest and breast tissue for any concerns and to guide the surgical approach
If you smoke, you will need to stop at least six weeks before and after surgery to support proper healing. Your care team will provide guidance to help you through this process.
Step 2: The Procedure
Male breast reduction surgery is typically done under anesthesia and takes about 1 to 2 hours. In more complex cases, the procedure may be performed under general anesthesia at a hospital.
During the procedure, your surgeon may:
- Make a small incision near the edge of the areola or under the arm.
- Remove glandular tissue using a scalpel, if needed.
- Use liposuction if excess fat is the main concern. A small tube connected to a vacuum gently removes fat through the incision.
- Remove excess skin if large amounts of tissue or fat are taken out to create a smooth, natural chest contour.
After surgery:
- Stitches will close the incisions.
- A small drain may be placed to prevent fluid buildup.
- The chest will be wrapped with bandages to help the skin heal properly.
Step 3: Recovery & Results
First Few Days
- Expect swelling and soreness.
- Compression garments will help with healing and support your chest.
1-2 Weeks
- You can return to light activities.
- Swelling will begin to go down.
4-6 Weeks
- Gradually resume exercise.
- Schedule a follow-up with your surgeon.
- It may take 3 months or more to see your final results as swelling continues to decrease.
Most patients notice visible improvements during recovery, with the final results becoming clearer over time.
Breast Reduction Surgery: Frequently Asked Questions
Is breast reduction covered by insurance?
In many cases, insurance covers breast reduction if it is considered medically necessary. Our team can help you understand your coverage and submit the required documentation.
Will I have visible scars or numbness?
Some scarring is expected, but our surgeons use advanced techniques to minimize and strategically place incisions for the best appearance. Scars usually fade over time. Some numbness or changes in sensation may occur but often improve within a year. In some cases, a second procedure may be needed to improve symmetry or remove additional tissue.
What if I am still losing weight or plan to lose weight?
Breast reduction is not a substitute for weight loss. If you are losing weight, it’s best to wait at least a year after reaching a stable weight before considering surgery. This helps ensure your final breast size remains consistent.
What can I expect after surgery?
You may experience temporary numbness, swelling, and changes in sensation, which typically improve within a year. In some cases, a follow-up procedure may be needed for additional adjustments. Our care team is here to support you throughout your recovery.
Will my results be permanent?
Yes, breast reduction offers long-lasting results. However, factors like weight changes, pregnancy, and aging may affect breast size over time.
Can I breastfeed after a breast reduction?
Breastfeeding may still be possible, but some women experience a reduced milk supply. If breastfeeding is important to you, discuss your options with your surgeon before surgery.
Testimonial
“I get all my primary care through Olmsted Medical Center and when I was exploring breast reduction, the Plastic Surgery department provided the same amazing care I’ve always had through OMC. From consultation to operation to post-op, everyone on my care team was there to listen and answer my questions thoughtfully. Everyone made me feel comfortable during a vulnerable time. The surgeons and team of nurses were knowledgeable and warm. I can truly say I had a wonderful experience and feel great about the OMC care team. I consistently recommend them to other people exploring breast reduction surgery.”
