Emergency Care

At Olmsted Medical Center (OMC), emergency care and waiting don’t go together. Our Emergency department is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, providing prompt, compassionate care when you need it most. From the moment you arrive, you receive rapid attention from our skilled Emergency Medicine team—because during an emergency, you don’t need the added stress of delays.

Expert Emergency Care

Our Emergency department provides stabilization, evaluation, and treatment for patients with acute or life-threatening illness or injury. The American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma classifies OMC’s Emergency department as a Level IV Trauma Center, meaning we provide initial trauma care and arrange transfer to higher-level trauma centers when necessary.

Our highly trained team of emergency medicine physicians, nurses, and support staff are equipped to handle urgent conditions such as:

  • chest pain and symptoms of heart attack
  • shortness of breath
  • severe bleeding
  • poisoning and toxin exposure
  • head injuries, including concussions
  • fractures and broken bones
  • lacerations
  • abdominal pain
  • trauma or injuries requiring immediate care.

Advanced Capabilities

Our fully equipped Emergency department offers access to advanced testing and procedures, such as:

  • continuous cardiac monitoring to detect abnormal rhythms immediately
  • CT scans read within minutes
  • spot-check tissue perfusion monitoring (StO₂) to ensure adequate blood flow and oxygen in injured limbs
  • access to durable medical equipment (crutches, wheelchairs, splints) for stabilization and recovery.

24/7 Emergency Care

OMC’s Emergency department is available 24/7, every day of the year. Whether you’re facing a serious medical emergency, a sudden injury, or an urgent health concern, you’ll find expert care, advanced technology, and compassionate service close to home.

What to Expect During Your Visit

When you arrive, you’ll be assessed through triage, a process that prioritizes patients based on the severity of their condition. Our goal is to stabilize and treat life-threatening conditions quickly, while also addressing urgent but non-critical concerns.

Mental health emergencies: Patients with suicidal or homicidal thoughts are evaluated, stabilized, and referred for appropriate follow-up care

Referrals and follow-up: All care and test results become part of your medical record. If additional treatment is required, our team coordinates referrals and schedules follow-up appointments

Transfers when necessary: If specialized care is required, we arrange direct transfer—such as admitting patients with serious cardiac concerns directly to Mayo Clinic without requiring a second ER visit

FAQs

Do I need to call ahead before visiting the Emergency department?

No. In an emergency, call 911 or come directly to the ED. For non-emergency after-hours concerns, you may call ahead to check wait times or speak with a nurse.

Does OMC’s Emergency department care for non-emergency conditions?

Yes, but we recommend visiting OMC’s Rochester Northwest Clinic or Urgent Care locations for non-emergency walk-in care when available.

Will I get my test results after my ED visit?

Yes. All results become part of your OMC medical record. If follow-up is needed, the appropriate department will contact you.
