Life After Weight Loss Surgery

Your weight-loss journey doesn’t end with surgery—it’s just the beginning.
At Olmsted Medical Center (OMC), our bariatric team provides ongoing support to help you maintain healthy habits, stay nourished, and reach your long-term goals.

We’ll guide you through every phase of recovery, from your first meal to your first anniversary and beyond.

Post-Surgery Nutrition: Healing and Nourishment

Your body needs time to heal and adjust after surgery. Our registered dietitians will help you safely advance your diet while ensuring you get the nutrients you need to stay healthy and strong.

You’ll start with liquid nutrition for the first few weeks. Gradually, your diet will progress to pureed and soft foods, then to solid foods as your body allows.

You’ll learn to:

  • Eat slowly and stop when you feel full.
  • Avoid overeating, which can cause discomfort or nausea.
  • Choose nutrient-rich foods that support your recovery.

This personalized guidance helps you feel your best and stay on track with your weight-loss goals.

Emotional Health and Adjustment

Adapting to a new lifestyle takes time. You’ll meet with a psychologist within the first three months after surgery to talk about how you’re adjusting physically and emotionally.

Your psychologist will help you:

  • Build confidence with your new habits.
  • Navigate emotional changes related to food, body image, and self-care.
  • Stay motivated as you achieve your goals.

This continued support helps ensure your success long after surgery.

Ongoing Nutrition Support

Long-term success means continuing to build healthy habits. After surgery, you’ll have follow-up visits with your dietitian at:

  • 1 week
  • 1 month
  • 3 months
  • 6 months
  • 12 months
  • Annually thereafter

At each visit, your dietitian will:

  • Review your eating patterns and nutrient intake.
  • Provide motivation and education.
  • Monitor your lab work to make sure you’re meeting your vitamin and mineral needs.

These regular check-ins keep your progress on track and your body healthy.

Follow-Up Visits with Your Surgeon

You’ll also meet regularly with your surgeon to monitor healing and progress. Appointments typically occur at:

  • 1 week
  • 1 month
  • 3 months
  • 6 months
  • 12 months
  • Annually thereafter

Your surgeon will assess your weight loss, review blood work, and check for any vitamin or mineral deficiencies to ensure your continued health.

Considering Cosmetic Surgery

After significant weight loss, some patients have excess skin. While cosmetic or reconstructive surgery is not required, it can be an option 12–18 months after surgery once your weight stabilizes.

It’s important to check with your insurance company to see if this type of procedure is covered under your plan.
