Google Translate is a free translation service that provides instant translations between 64 different languages. It can translate words, sentences and web pages between any combination of our supported languages. When Google Translate generates a translation, it looks for patterns in hundreds of millions of documents to help decide on the best translation for you. By detecting patterns in documents that have already been translated by human translators, Google Translate can make intelligent guesses as to what an appropriate translation should be. This process of seeking patterns in large amounts of text is called "statistical machine translation". Since the translations are generated by machines, not all translation will be perfect. The more human-translated documents that Google Translate can analyze in a specific language, the better the translation quality will be. This is why translation accuracy will sometimes vary across languages. By providing these translations, we hope to make essential information more easily available to all patients and visitors to Olmsted Medical Center. However, please be aware that the statistical machine translations provided by Google Translate may not always be accurate.
How do I use Google Translate?
Simply click on the Google “Select Language” drop-down menu at the bottom of any page. Then, choose a language from the drop-down menu. Google Translate will display the translated text without reloading or redirecting you. If you click on a link in the translated page, the target web page also will be translated automatically for you – allowing you to seamlessly browse through our website in your language.
Is any OMC site content translated by real people?
Yes, some content on this site has been professionally translated into Spanish. OMC employs one full-time Spanish language medical translator and partners with local, regional, and national community services to meet on-site foreign-language translation needs.
Why is only part of the web page translated?
Google Translate cannot read site graphics, drop-down menu content, text within photos, news items imported through an RSS feed, and certain other site content. In these cases, the text will remain in English.
Why doesn’t the language I chose display properly?
In order to view a page in a particular language, your browser must have that language support installed. To download support for specific languages, your browser’s support website.
Why did half of my text disappear—or my browser just freeze?
Google Translate breaks text into a series of 500-character chunks and continuously sends them back and forth until the entire page has been translated. This processing system occasionally creates confusion in how a particular block of text is translated. Also, if the page is very long or your computer processor is not powerful enough, it may cause your browser to freeze.
What can I do to improve the translation quality?
If you encounter a translation that doesn't seem right, quite often Google Translate will have alternative results available. To view these, simply click the phrase in question. When you click a better alternative translation, Google Translate will learn from your feedback and continue to improve over time.
You can also help improve translation quality by using Translator Toolkit for translating or by uploading your translation memories into Translator Toolkit.
